Robert Posey "Bob" Breneman, Jr., 64, of Mountville, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at home, surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer for the past two years. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Robert Posey, Sr. and April Lammey Breneman. Bob worked at Hamilton Precision Metals, Lancaster General Hospital and PennDot. He was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1976 and attended Lancaster Business School. Bob was a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a sound technician. He was well known at many local gyms and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed working outdoors, especially in his garden and outdoor railroads. Bob had a true love for his family.

He is survived by his children: Kayla M. (Vicente Morales) Breneman, Columbia; Robert L. (Jessica Geiger) Breneman, Mount Joy and Jessalynne P. (Andrew) Strickler, York. Seven grandchildren. One sister: Barbara O. Breneman, Lancaster. One brother: Thomas H. (Diane L.) Breneman, Lancaster. Former wife and mother of his children: Cammie Breneman.

Ruth A. Reitz

Ruth A. Reitz, 79, of Homestead Village, entered into her Lord's presence on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Elvin L. Reitz who passed away on June 13, 2022. She was born in Manheim, daughter of the late Andrew N. and Nora Groff Miller. Ruth was a nurse, having worked at St. Joseph Hospital, the Mennonite Home and several daycare centers. She was a member of Lancaster Alliance Church and was active in childcare at the church. She enjoyed cross-stitching, hosting international students and keeping in touch with her family. She loved people and was a people-person.

She is survived by three brothers: David G. Miller, Lancaster, Andrew G. (Naomi) Miller, Manheim and Daniel G. (Joyce) Miller, Lebanon. One sister-in-law: Ethel Miller, Lancaster. She was preceded in death by one brother: John G. Miller.

Kimberly J. Miller

Kimberly J. Miller, 48, of Mountville, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022 surrounded by her loving family, at home. She was the wife of Troy Miller with whom she celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on August 16, 2022. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Harold L. (Gloria) Shirk, Lititz and the late Shirley J. Graves Miller. Kim worked as a Senior Project Manager for Marketechs Design Studio and was the Skating School Director at Lancaster Ice Rink for 21 years. She enjoyed figure skating, watching her son play ice hockey and her daughter horseback riding.

Surviving in addition to her husband, father and step-mother, one son: Aidan M. Miller and one daughter: Emily J. Miller, both at home. Three brothers: David A. (Cathy) Shirk, San Francisco; Douglas W. Shirk, Strongsville, OH and W. Dennis (Lisa) Shirk, Lancaster. Mother-in-law and step-father-in-law: Nancy Jean (Mike) Newcomer, Lancaster.

Matthew Lee Myers

 
 

Matthew Lee Myers, 46, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 after a long battle with Amyloidosis. He was the son of the late Pamela and Barry Myers. Matt worked for Keystone Fireworks and enjoyed fishing and playing spades, in his free time. He was a kid at heart, hardcore Pittsburgh Steelers fan, beer connoisseur, true lover of animals and had a secret talent for writing poetry. His sarcasm, sense of humor, caring heart and kind soul will be missed by all of his friends and loved ones.

Matt is survived by his three children: Skylar Cassel, Bryana Myers and Matthew Myers. Two siblings: Maggie Meck Tweed and Jason Lintner. As well as his true "ride or die" lifelong friend and care taker, Jason Musser.  He was preceded in death by two siblings: Jennifer Heisey and Joseph Lintner.

John P. Zinkand, 89, a resident of Brethren Village for the past six years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at home. He was the husband of Linda Gerlach Zinkand, to whom he was married for 53 years. John was born in Columbia, son of the late John F. and Emma Peifer Zinkand. He worked for UGI Corporation in various sales positions in Lancaster and Harrisburg. He then joined the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association, Harrisburg, where he was the Executive Vice-President for 30 years before his retirement in 2000. John was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1951 and Franklin and Marshall College, Class of 1955, having received his BS in Economics. He was a 55 year member of Columbia Lodge #286, F&AM and a Veteran of the US Army serving in Germany (1956-58).

Surviving in addition to his wife, his daughter: Beth (Neil) Michel, Davis, CA. One son: John R. (Jacqueline) Zinkand, Portland, OR. Grandchildren: Marley Rae and Donald John Michel; and Alden John Zinkand.

Past, Donald. April 19, 1931 - October 23, 2022. Passed away at St. Anne's Retirement Community, Columbia, PA with pneumonia after a long battle with vascular dementia. Donald is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia Past. He was a longtime resident of Ralston and LaVista, NE. He was a native of North Dakota and served in the North Dakota National Guard and the US Coast Guard. After graduating from the University of North Dakota, he worked for Northwestern Bell for 34 years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed especially for his hugs and terrific sense of humor 

Surviving in addition to his wife, his daughters: CAPT (ret) Marilyn Past, USN and Mary (Tim) Rasmussen, grandchildren, Andrew (Melanie) Rasmussen, Dan (Lacey) Rasmussen and Katy (Griffin) Schroeder, 3 great grandchildren, sister-in-law, LaVonne Past, brother-in-law Archie Oster, numerous nieces and nephews.

Geoffrey A. Byrne, 79, of Lititz, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Joan M. Kline Byrne with whom he celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on June 13, 2022. He was born in Columbia, son of the late George W. and Margaret Lodge Byrne. Geoffrey worked in the construction trade. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a member of East Petersburg Mennonite Church, where he was a greeter. Geoffrey enjoyed woodworking, his grandchildren and also praying with people at the Downtown Ministries, Lancaster.

Surviving in addition to his wife, step-children: Lisa (Steve) Cockerill, Australia; Vicki (the late J. Edward, III) Weber, Lancaster and Eva Davis (Julian Govan), Camden, NJ. Seven step-grandchildren: Dakota, Carley, Elijah, Elliot, Ehren, Brandon and Dylan. One brother: Michael Byrne. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Gregory and Larry Byrne.

Evelyn B. Stehman, 94, of Manor Township, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2022. She was the wife of the late J. Richard "Dick" Stehman. Evelyn was born in Manor Township, daughter of the late Maurice and Bertha Gamble Bender. She worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 30 years, with the last 15 being a referee for Unemployment Compensation hearings, before her retirement in 1990. Evelyn was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, East Petersburg and was a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling the United States and Europe.

She is survived by her children: Constance S. Miller, Philip R. Stehman, Kristine Grego and Stephen L. Stehman. Nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Ruth Bortzfield and Patricia (Paul) Girvin. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Harold J. "Pete" Dietrich

 
 

Harold J. "Pete" Dietrich, 104, of the Mennonite Home, formerly of Woodcrest Villa and Mountville, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022. He was the husband of Dorothy "Dot" Greenawalt Dietrich, to whom he was married for 72 years before she passed away in January, 2015. Pete was born in East Petersburg, son of the late Charles and Ada Dietrich. He graduated from East Hempfield High School and Lancaster Business College and was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ where he served on the consistory for many years and was President for two terms.

In February, 1941, he was drafted as a private in the Army for one year. In December, the one year became five years. He was discharged as a 2nd Lt. Bombardier on a B-24 in February,1946. Remaining in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Major in 1962. After retiring from active duty, he worked for Armstrong Corp, Co. in the general office of the Building Product Division on Liberty Street, for 37 years.

In the Spring of 1954, with the help of the Mountville VFW, he organized and managed the first youth baseball team in Mountville. He managed teams for the next 20 years. In 1962, his midget-midget team won the first New Era Tournament for Mountville. Pete was also a member of the Mountville VFW, Reese-Hall Post #8757.

Pete's main interest was sports. In early life, he played baseball and basketball. He attended many Baltimore Colts, Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies games. Along with his wife, they played a lot of pinochle and traveled, with Myrtle Beach being their favorite. He enjoyed downhill skiing, which he continued until the age of 60.

He is survived by two sons: Timothy Dietrich, Mountville and Richard "Tom" Dietrich, companion of Lori VanHorne, Mount Joy. Three grandchildren: Michelle, Valerie and Lisa. Five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Chris and one sister Sarah Gaus.

Howard S. Magnin, 60, of Mount Joy, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at Rose City Nursing and Rehabilitation. He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Ralph D. and Cecelia Getka Magnin. He was a roll off driver for Waste Management. Howard enjoyed the Philadelphia Eagles, camping, classic cars and spending time with his granddaughter.

He is survived by two daughters: Samantha L. Magnin and Caroline A. Magnin, and their mother: Rose Dempsey. One granddaughter: Mia S. Magnin. Longtime friend: Flo Nesspor. One brother: David Magnin. He was preceded in death by one sister: Lois Davis.

Naomi S. Funk, 92, of Manor Township, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at her residence at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late James H. Funk. She was born in Manor Township, daughter of the late Clayton R. and Elisabeth Sangery Shenk. Naomi worked for Wolfgang Candy at the Columbia Market House, the Student Memorial Center at Millersville University for five years and volunteered at the Columbia ReUzit Shop for 20 years. She was a lifetime member of Central Manor Church of God, also attended Calvary Church, Central Manor Camp Meeting and she enjoyed sewing, baking and cross stitching.

She is survived by two daughters: Patsy (Charlie) McCall, Comfort, TX; Jacqueline (David) Leaman, Willow Street. Three sons: J. Scott (Celesta Mummau) Funk, Millersville; Wesley (Laura Diller) Funk, Lancaster and Richard (Joyce Burkholder) Funk, Washington Boro. Fifteen grandchildren. Twenty-one great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Abraham Shenk, Landis Shenk, Myrtle Potter, Clayton Shenk, Jr., Mary Shenk, Benjamin Shenk, Raymond Shenk, Ruth Shenk and Paul Shenk.

Barton E. Heuyard, 97, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at the VA Medical Center, Lebanon. He was the husband of the late Kathryn N. Wagner Heuyard, who passed away in 1993 and the late Mary Spicer Heuyard, who passed away in 2011. Barton was born in Farmersville, son of the late Howard and Anna Mae White Heuyard. He was a carpenter and a Veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving during WWII. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, flowers and going to the casino.

Barton is survived by his children: Dawn M. (John S.) Rothfus; Bill H. (Tracy A.) Heuyard; Robert M. Heuyard and Virginia M. (the late Kirby) Gantz. Step-children: Vance N. (Debbie A.) Spicer; J. Wallace (Beverly) Spicer and Lisa Marie (Tony) Mayo. Nine grandchildren. Eleven great-grandchildren. Seven step-granchildren. Twelve step-great-grandchidren. One brother: Ed (Nancy) Sauders and one sister: Arlene Keenen. He was preceded in death by two daughters: Cynthia Heuyard and Jean Zaleski. One son: Barton F. Heuyard. Four brothers and one sister.

Miller Platt. Carole worked as a pub room coordinator for RR Donnelley, Inc, before her retirement. She enjoyed reading and sewing.

She is survived by three daughters: Tracy L. (James) Fritsch, Peach Bottom; Lisa J. Trout and Heather J. Sanchez, both of Lancaster. Six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. One brother: Richard C. Platt, Jr., Texas. Two sisters: Sherry J. Reynolds and Connie Rankin, both of Lancaster.

Rodney R. Leibhart

Rodney R. Leibhart, 82, of St. Peter's Apartments, Columbia, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022 at home. He was born in York, son of the late Donald S. and Betty Duncan Leibhart. Rodney was the manager at Bauer's Shoe Store, Lancaster, for many years. He was a member of First Assembly of God, Lancaster.

Mary Ellen Hank, 86, of Mountville, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2022 at home, with her loving family by her side. She was the wife of Charles R. Hank, with whom she was married for 64 years. She was born in Manor Township, daughter of the late Earl M., Sr. and Della B. Hess Barley. Mary Ellen was a poultry technician for Dr. Wilson Miller and also worked at Shenk's Extracts. She babysat for many children, loving them as her own. She was a lifetime member of Stehman Memorial United Methodist Church and enjoyed going to the cabin at Black Log Valley, Central Manor Camp Meeting, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and was fortunate to take one last trip with her family in May

William D. Hoffman, 89, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at the Gardens at Stevens. He was the husband of Jane E. Hoffman, who passed away on June 28, 2003. He was born in Dauphin County, son of the late Raymond D. and Sarah R. Hoffman. Bill was a supervisor for Armstrong World Industries for 35 years before his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the cabin in Clearfield County.

He is survived by one son: Kenneth L. (Kathy M.) Hoffman. Two grandsons: Kyle Hoffman and Stephen Barrett. Five great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. One brother: Ronald Hoffman. One sister: Betty Westenheffer. He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.

Harry Lawson "Skip" Morgan, Jr., 76, of Mountville, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 peacefully at home with his loving wife by his side. He was the husband of Jane A. Jennings Morgan, with whom he was married for 53 years. He was born in Clinton, SC, son of the late Harry Lawson Morgan, Sr. and Rubye Pearle Sellers Morgan. Skip was a commercial lender, having worked in the banking industry for 41 years before he retired from M & T Bank. He was a Veteran of the US Army, serving during the Vietnam War and was a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church. Skip was a Boy Scout Leader, served on the Mountville Boro Council for more than 20 years, and was a Board Member and served as Treasurer of the Mountville Community Service Foundation. He loved NASCAR with Jimmie Johnson being his favorite driver, camping, and woodworking at his shop at home. Skip was an avid Penn State Football fan and a Dallas Cowboys fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: Paul J. (Christina L.) Morgan, Harrisburg. One grandson: William Harry Morgan. Two sisters: Pamela (Paul) Francis and Gloria (Kent) Gibson, Daytona, FL. Several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother: Charles Morgan and one sister: Ellen Berry.

Carl S. Hackman, Sr., 94, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, formerly of Willow Street, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family on Friday, September 30, 2022. He was born in Willow Street, son of the late Harry L. Hackman and Anna Shenk Hackman of Willow Street. Carl was preceded in death by his sisters Barbara Jane Weimer and June Louise Galbach. He is also preceded in death by his daughter Peggy L. Stohler.

Carl is survived by his loving wife Evelyn Bernice (Vinson), with whom he just celebrated his 73rd wedding anniversary. Also surviving are two daughters Carol Ann Disanto (William), New Holland, Debra L. Sload (G. David), Conestoga and a son, Carl S., Jr. (Pamela S.), Mount Joy. Five grandchildren include William Jr., Elizabeth (deceased) Joshua, Janelle, and Megan. Seven great grandchildren include Elizabeth, Daniel, Timothy, Jethro (deceased), Trye Jethro, Sylas and Asher.

Carl graduated from West Lampeter High School in 1946, then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served two years as a SeaBee during World War II, where he received the Victory Medal. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked as a carpenter apprentice then advanced to foreman, for a home builder, Samuel E. Long, General Contractor for nine years, then Diller Plank for 7 years, then retired from Warfel Construction Company after 30 years of service, twenty-five of those years serving as a superintendent.

Carl experienced many highlights of his profession in the construction field, one in which he worked in for over 45 years.

Carl received a citation from the United States Army Combat Systems for the building of the Virbration Test Facility at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Aberdeen, Maryland, in 1988. There is no other facility like this in the world today.

Carl was instrumental in the building of Air Products, Lancaster PA, West Shore Office Building, Camphill, PA, the Ben Franklin Hospital wing at Masonic Homes, Elizabethtown, East Towne Mall Shopping Center, Lancaster, and Phoebe Burks Village Retirement Home in Wernersville, PA. Other big projects include Human Factor’s Engineering, Aberdeen Maryland and Chemical Laboratory Building, Edgewood Maryland.

After retiring briefly, he was called back into the work force as a project manager in the oversight of the building of the youth center for the Refton Brethren in Christ Church in Refton, PA. He was also superintendent for the building of the Lion’s Club Community Building in Willow Street, PA.

While retired, Carl and his wife Evelyn would travel to Winter Haven Florida for the winter months and spent their summers at their summer home in Ocean View, Delaware. They both loved to fish on their boat in the ocean and received quite a few citations for their catches.

In addition to fishing, Carl was an avid hunter, including small game of squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, as well as hunting deer. He hunted in Maryland and Pennsylvania as well as Texas with his good friend and brother-in-law Frank Goodhart and his sons, ​where he shot quite a few trophy buck. Carl was a member of the Lone Pine Hunting Club, Potter County, PA for over 50 years.

In 1975, while building the Ben Franklin Hospital, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, Carl was introduced to the Free and Accepted Masons. In 1977, He began on the road to becoming a Free and Accepted Master Mason when he became a member of Lamberton Lodge # 476, Lancaster, PA where he received his 1st - 3rd degree. As a member of Lamberton Lodge he was active as worshipful master in 1984, and again in 1994. He was a member of the membership committee, a steward, a member of the Masonic Education Committee, was a representative to the Masonic Center Board, Chairman of the 125th Anniversary Banquet, member of the sick and visitation committee and member of the Charity Committee. He received a meritorious service award in 1994.

He also became a member of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Lancaster PA in 1977, where he received his 4th - 14th degree and, in 1988 he was Thrice Potent Master. Other committees in which he was involved include treasurer for the Lancaster County Scottish Rite Club, member of the stage crew, -Emeritus status, membership committee, advisory committee, building committee, and past chairperson. He was also instrumental in the planning, design and building of the Learning Center for Dyslexia at Lancaster Masonic Center, Lancaster PA.

Carl was also an active member for Order of DeMolay, Lancaster Chapter where he served on the Advisory Council, invested in the Honorary Legions of Honor Award in 1986, and was a member of the Susquehanna Valley Order of DeMolay.

Carl was also a member of the Lancaster County Shrine Club from 1978- 2015. As a member of the Shrine Club, he was active in the Oriental Band where he was a member, trustee, and president of the club in 1998. He served as a drummer and pushed the snake basket and was the overseer of Matilda, the camel, which included transportation of her to Virginia Beach and various other parades.

Carl was also a member of the Zembo Temple Shrine, Harrisburg, PA where he was a member of the membership committee, and circus ads and communication committee and a member of the Zembo oriental band. He received several membership awards while being a member of this club.

Next, Carl was a member of Harrisburg Consistory, Harrisburg Pa, in 1978 where he received his 15th - 32nd degrees. Here he functioned as a degree worker and steward and served on the membership committee. He was past president of Lancaster County Scottish Rite Club. A highlight of his masonry journey was when he was coronated with his 33rd Honorary Degree Masonry in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1995.

Carl, and his wife, were members of the James Buchanan High Twelve Club # 687. Here they were charter members of the club. He served as President for 2 years and a masonic representative and was the High Twelve of the Year 1996-1997. He also received the Gold Honor Award 1991 by the York Rite Sovereign College of North America.

Carl was also a member of York Rite Masonry and belonged to the following chapters: Royal Arch Chapter No 43, where he was past High Priest and Goodwin Council No 19, Royal and Select Master Masons, Lancaster PA, and Commandery No ​13, Knights Templar, Lancaster PA where he was a representative to the Masonic Board. He was also a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Lancaster Forest No 27.

In addition to his voluntary activities of the Free and Accepted Masons, Carl was involved within the community and his church. Early in his married life, he was a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Willow Street Fire Company and Ambulance Association. He was also a past member of the Willow Street Lion’s Club where he was on the board and received Lion of the Year Award in 2003. He was a member of American Legion Post 34, Lancaster as well as past member of Seabee Veterans of America, Seabee Island X-5, Lancaster PA.

Carl was a former member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, South Queen and Farnum Streets, Lancaster, for over 62 years, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees, the building committee, Boy Scout committee and a member of the bowling and softball teams as well as the choir, singing bass. Then Carl and his wife Evelyn transferred their church membership to Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church in Mountville, PA, where he was also active in the choir.

As a boy, Carl and his family attended Boehm’s United Methodist Church in Willow Street. Carl will be buried here alongside his parents, granddaughter, and great grandson.

The Funeral Service will be held at Boehm’s United Methodist Church, 13 West Boehm’s Road, Willow Street, on Monday, October 10, 2022 at 1:00 P. Viewing from 11:00 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. when a masonic service will be held. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery with Full Military Honors. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Alice Marie Smith Copeland

 
 

Alice Marie Smith Copeland, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022 from natural causes in Hendersonville, NC where she lived the final 29 years of her life. Alice was born and lived her early life in Columbia, during the height of The Depression. She attended Columbia High School and was later named the town's May Queen in 1947. She met the love of her life, Joe, at the age of 15 while in high school, married him in 1951 and they spent 68 wonderful years together. Alice was a loving mother of three children, a homemaker, a gardener, a cookie baker and avid doll maker and collector. She was a long-standing member and former Treasurer of the Land of Sky Doll Club in Hendersonville.

Alice is survived by her children: Bradford Copeland, Lynne Copeland Allen and Ward Copeland. Nine grandchildren: Erin Copeland Hyatt, Cooper Copeland, Stuart Allen, Jordan Allen, Martin Allen, Julia Allen D'Aurelio, Reagan Copeland, Avery Copeland and Joseph Copeland. Four great-grandchildren: Rowan Hyatt, Carys Hyatt, Asher Allen and Archer Allen.
