Grace B. "Bobbie" Styer

Grace B. "Bobbie" Styer, 79, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, December 12, 2022 surrounded by her loving family at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of William F. Styer, Sr. with whom she celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on October 24, 2022. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Joseph R. and Elizabeth Schmalhofer Forrest. Bobbie was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and worked at B&D Grocery, was a District Secretary for Thom McAn Shoe Store and was a den leader for the Cub Scouts. She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one son: William (April Campbell) Styer, Jr., Kissimmee, FL. Two daughters: Jodi (Keary) Smith and Peggy (Joseph) Spiese, all of Columbia. Five grandchildren: Carlyle Styer, Dylan Smith, Brett Spiese, Brady Smith and Brynn Spiese. Two sisters: Jan (Eric) Woznick, Panama City Beach, FL and Nancy Wilson, Woodburn, IN. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter: Nicole Styer and three sisters: Mary Weaver, Roseann Feltch and Josephine Perry.

Dr. Fayez R. Awad

Dr. Fayez R. Awad, 87, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. He was the husband of Manerva W. Awad to whom he was married for 40 years. He was born in Cairo, Egypt, son of the late Rouphail R. Awad and Zakia Makar. While he was an esteemed veterinarian in Egypt, he emigrated to America to provide a better life for his family. Here he established Dr. Awad's Animal Hospital, Elizabethtown where he proudly served the community for over 40 years. His talents exceeded the local area. He was sought after by prestigious institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Zoo. Dr. Awad was a founding member of St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church and the Arabic Christian Church, York.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: John F. (Marisa) Awad, Elizabethtown. One daughter: Mary F. Awad, Elizabethtown. One brother: Raouf Awad, Mountville. Five sisters: Karima, Klair, Nadia, Nabila, Samia. He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Mary Jane "MJ" Spicer

Mary Jane "MJ" Spicer, 92, lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Thomas V. Spicer, Sr. to whom she was married for 53 years before he passed away on September 20, 2018. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Philip P. and Mary Resch Habel. She was a loving wife and mother to her family as well as an employee of the former Werman Shoe Factory, Marietta. Mary Jane was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and was always "Columbia Proud," having supported Columbia Athletics which included Basketball and Football. She was an avid Penn State Football fan and New York Yankees fan. She would often impress others with her sports knowledge.

Mary Jane enjoyed speaking with and taking care of all of the people in her neighborhood and would help to keep the streets and properties clean, which promoted a sense of community pride. Anyone who knew her would appreciate her witty banter. Her favorite joy was listening to music by Bobby Vinton and having attended many of his concerts.

She is survived by one daughter: Lisa (Charles) Lehman, Columbia. Two sons: Mike (Brenda) Spicer, Lancaster and Scott Spicer, Columbia. Two step-sons: Thomas (Sue) Spicer, Jr., Columbia and Gary (Kay) Spicer, Maytown. Thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother: James Habel and one sister: Janet Frey.

Mary Anne Keller

Mary Anne Keller, 90, of Manheim Township, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, November 26, 2022. She was the wife of Dean H. Keller with whom she would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on January 28, 2023. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late R. Clark and Elizabeth McAldon McCachren. Mary Anne lived the majority of her life in Lancaster and worked as an Executive Secretary for several large manufacturing firms in Lancaster. She was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1950 and studied numerous college courses at Franklin and Marshall during her work career. Mary Anne was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband, three children: Beth Clerval; Michael (Janel) Keller and Barbara (Matthew) Raasch. Three grandchildren: Tara Raasch, Michael Raasch and Karli Raasch. One brother: Michael (Clarice) McCachren. One brother-in-law: Bill Sloyer. She was preceded in death by one sister: Margot Sloyer.

Jesse F. Sturkie, Sr.

Jesse F. Sturkie, Sr., 59, of Mount Joy, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was born in McKeesport, son of the late Charles Moore and Judith Bowser. Jesse worked as a warehouse forklift operator and was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh Sports Teams.

He is survived by his loving companion, Mary A. Leary Sturkie. Two sons: Jesse F. Sturkie, Jr. and Kristopher Sturkie. Step-children: Heather Leary, Christina Bridgman and D.J. Bridgman. Nine grandchildren.

Sonia A. Griffith, 85, of Mountville, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 21, 2022. She was the wife of Robert A. Griffith with whom she celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on June 3, 2022. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Stanley and Treva Mundis Simmons Altland. Sonia was a registered nurse, having worked at Lancaster General Hospital.

Surviving in addition to her husband, one daughter: Kimberly G. (Steve) Brown, Jasper, GA. James Eugene Musser

James Eugene Musser, 82, a lifelong resident of Columbia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 17, 2022 after a brief illness at home. He was the husband of Pat Brubaker Musser with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on April 28, 2022. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late B. Eugene and Mildred Heisey Musser. He was a graduate of Penn Manor High School, Class of 1958, where he attended the Ag Program. He loved farming all of his life. He was a proud owner/operator and long-haul truck driver, known as “Boss Man” by the many drivers he employed. He deeply treasured the lasting relationships that they shared. Jim was very proud of the driver safety awards he received over the years. He hauled many things, but he enjoyed hauling hogs the most. Jim enjoyed gardening, watching sports, restoring antique farm tractors, classic cars and spending time with his family. He was a generous, fun-loving and hard working man. He grew up at the Mountville Church of the Brethren and most recently attended Ironville United Methodist Church.

Surviving In addition to his wife, three children: Christie (Bryan) Hunt, Columbia; Jim Musser, Jr., Wrightsville and Amy (Ed) Smith, Lancaster. Four grandchildren: Brock (Sarah) Hunt; Betsy (Mark) Cloyd; Ellie Smith and Grayson Smith. Three great-grandchildren: Theo and Hallie Hunt, and Isaiah Cloyd. Five brothers: Bill, Tom, John, Joe, and Pete Musser. One brother-in-law: Bob Brubaker.

Anisa Mahadeo, 41, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was born in Sangre Grande, Trinidad, daughter of the Zabar Hosein and Kalapatie Deocharan Fairley. Anisa was a day care provider.

Sharon E. Pyfer

Sharon E. Pyfer, 72, of West Hempfield Township, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. She was the wife of the late Ronald N. Pyfer who passed away on May 26, 2014. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Arthur R. and Mary Jane Kline Shenberger. Sharon was a supervisor for Kahn-Lucas Manufacturing before her retirement and also worked for Southern Container. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and enjoyed going to the beach at Bethany, DE, the mountains, baking, cooking and sewing. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons: Ronald N. Pyfer, Jr., Columbia and Christopher N. (Amanda) Pyfer, Columbia. One daughter: Lisa M. Pyfer, Columbia. Four grandchildren: Monica, Owen, Lilly and Benjamin. Margaret R. Chaney, 88, of St. Peter's Apartments, Columbia passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. She was the wife of the late Carvel O. Chaney. She was born in Conowingo, MD, daughter of the late William and Janet Hobday Beck. Margaret was a production worker at Nissan Foods and worked atColumbia News for many years, loving her job and coworkers. Following her retirement, she volunteered at the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop. In her earlier years she enjoyed dancing, music, and going to the beach at Millsboro, DE. In her later years, she enjoyed the social events and her many good friends at St. Peter's. Margaret was an avid Penn State and Philadelphia Eagles fan.

She is survived by her children: John C. Chaney, Columbia; Sandy L. (Scott) Gipe, Columbia and Susan M. (Bud) Gainer, Mount Joy. Six grandchildren: Joe Graham, Holly Goldsborough, Christopher Chaney, Sara Chaney, Bradley Barninger and Brent Barninger. Eight great-grandchildren. One sister: Janet Heffner, Red Lion. Margaret C. Smith, 90, of St. Anne's Retirement Community passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Kenneth L. Smith, who passed away on March 19, 1997. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late William Neidamyer and Alice Byers Neidamyer Kring. Margaret was a secretary for the School District of Lancaster for 31 years before her retirement in June of 1997 and was a graduate of JP McCaskey High School, Class of 1950. She was a former member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Lancaster for 41 years and was very active on different committees. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Mountville and volunteered at St. Anne's Retirement Community.

She is survived by one son: Jeffrey L. (Ann L.) Smith, Columbia. One grandson: William J. Smith. Her longtime companion: Jack F. Bowers, Wrightsville.

Pauline L. (Forry) Houck

Pauline L. (Forry) Houck, 99, of St. Anne's Retirement Community, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Howard H. Houck, to whom she was married for 51 years before he passed away on April 14, 1995. She was born in Wrightsville, daughter of the late Walter S. and Marian Fisher Forry. She worked as a seamstress for Tidy Products, Columbia, before her retirement. Pauline was a charter member of Reformation Lutheran Church. She enjoyed antique glass, china, playing cards with friends, games on the computer, movies (especially old movies), going out to eat with friends, and dogs, especially Harley, Pauline was an avid reader and enjoyed word puzzles. She was a member of NARFE Chapter 301.

She is survived by one daughter: Joanne E. (Robert F., Jr.) Coleman, Lancaster. One grandson: Eric R. Houck, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by one son: Ronald R. Houck and one brother: Alfred P. Forry, Sr.

Jacob Eugene "Gene" Schock

Jacob Eugene "Gene" Schock, 82, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 11, 2022 at his residence at St. Anne's Retirement Community. He was the husband of the late Sherilyn Diller Schock with whom he shared 33 years of marriage before she passed away on February 1, 2017. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Jacob F., Jr and Katie Ginder Schock. Gene worked at Funk Brothers, Inc. and was a Road Supervisor for Manor Township for more than 20 years, before his retirement. Following his retirement, he worked part time at Kreider's Mulch. Gene was a member of Manor Church. He enjoyed bowling, having been a member of a bowling league, riding his motorcycle and hunting. He was also a volunteer for Washington Boro Fire Company, Blue Rock Fire and Rescue and their Fire Police.

Gene is survived by two sisters: Kathryn (Marvin) Roberts, Holtwood and Linda (Kim) Yousey, McAlisterville. One brother: Richard (Sharon) Schock, Lancaster. Three nieces. Five nephews. Six great-nephews and three great-nieces. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Fern and Faye Schock.

Robert Posey "Bob" Breneman, Jr.

Robert Posey "Bob" Breneman, Jr., 64, of Mountville, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at home, surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer for the past two years. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Robert Posey, Sr. and April Lammey Breneman. Bob worked at Hamilton Precision Metals, Lancaster General Hospital and PennDot. He was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 1976 and attended Lancaster Business School. Bob was a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a sound technician. He was well known at many local gyms and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed working outdoors, especially in his garden and outdoor railroads. Bob had a true love for his family.

He is survived by his children: Kayla M. (Vicente Morales) Breneman, Columbia; Robert L. (Jessica Geiger) Breneman, Mount Joy and Jessalynne P. (Andrew) Strickler, York. Seven grandchildren. Ruth A. Reitz, 79, of Homestead Village, entered into her Lord's presence on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at her residence. She was the wife of the late Elvin L. Reitz who passed away on June 13, 2022. She was born in Manheim, daughter of the late Andrew N. and Nora Groff Miller. Ruth was a nurse, having worked at St. Joseph Hospital, the Mennonite Home and several daycare centers. She was a member of Lancaster Alliance Church and was active in childcare at the church. She enjoyed cross-stitching, hosting international students and keeping in touch with her family. She loved people and was a people-person.

She is survived by three brothers: David G. Miller, Lancaster, Andrew G. (Naomi) Miller, Manheim and Daniel G. (Joyce) Miller, Lebanon. One sister-in-law: Ethel Miller, Lancaster. She was preceded in death by one brother: John G. Miller.

Kimberly J. Miller

Kimberly J. Miller, 48, of Mountville, passed away on Sunday, November 6, 2022 surrounded by her loving family, at home. She was the wife of Troy Miller with whom she celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary on August 16, 2022. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Harold L. (Gloria) Shirk, Lititz and the late Shirley J. Graves Miller. Kim worked as a Senior Project Manager for Marketechs Design Studio and was the Skating School Director at Lancaster Ice Rink for 21 years. She enjoyed figure skating, watching her son play ice hockey and her daughter horseback riding.

Surviving in addition to her husband, father and step-mother, one son: Aidan M. Miller and one daughter: Emily J. Miller, both at home. Three brothers: David A. (Cathy) Shirk, San Francisco; Douglas W. Shirk, Strongsville, OH and W. Dennis (Lisa) Shirk, Lancaster. Mother-in-law and step-father-in-law: Nancy Jean (Mike) Newcomer, Lancaster.

Matthew Lee Myers

Matthew Lee Myers, 46, of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 after a long battle with Amyloidosis. He was the son of the late Pamela and Barry Myers. Matt worked for Keystone Fireworks and enjoyed fishing and playing spades, in his free time. He was a kid at heart, hardcore Pittsburgh Steelers fan, beer connoisseur, true lover of animals and had a secret talent for writing poetry. His sarcasm, sense of humor, caring heart and kind soul will be missed by all of his friends and loved ones.

Matt is survived by his three children: Skylar Cassel, Bryana Myers and Matthew Myers. Two siblings: Maggie Meck Tweed and Jason Lintner. As well as his true "ride or die" lifelong friend and care taker, Jason Musser.  He was preceded in death by two siblings: Jennifer Heisey and Joseph Lintner.

John P. Zinkand, 89, a resident of Brethren Village for the past six years, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at home. He was the husband of Linda Gerlach Zinkand, to whom he was married for 53 years. John was born in Columbia, son of the late John F. and Emma Peifer Zinkand. He worked for UGI Corporation in various sales positions in Lancaster and Harrisburg. He then joined the Pennsylvania Petroleum Association, Harrisburg, where he was the Executive Vice-President for 30 years before his retirement in 2000. John was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1951 and Franklin and Marshall College, Class of 1955, having received his BS in Economics. He was a 55 year member of Columbia Lodge #286, F&AM and a Veteran of the US Army serving in Germany (1956-58).

Surviving in addition to his wife, his daughter: Beth (Neil) Michel, Davis, CA. One son: John R. (Jacqueline) Zinkand, Portland, OR. Grandchildren: Marley Rae and Donald John Michel; and Alden John Zinkand.

The Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Craig Ross, officiating. Donald Past

Past, Donald. April 19, 1931 - October 23, 2022. Passed away at St. Anne's Retirement Community, Columbia, PA with pneumonia after a long battle with vascular dementia. Donald is survived by his wife of 69 years, Virginia Past. He was a longtime resident of Ralston and LaVista, NE. He was a native of North Dakota and served in the North Dakota National Guard and the US Coast Guard. After graduating from the University of North Dakota, he worked for Northwestern Bell for 34 years. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed especially for his hugs and terrific sense of humor 

Surviving in addition to his wife, his daughters: CAPT (ret) Marilyn Past, USN and Mary (Tim) Rasmussen, grandchildren, Andrew (Melanie) Rasmussen, Dan (Lacey) Rasmussen and Katy (Griffin) Schroeder, 3 great grandchildren, sister-in-law, LaVonne Past, brother-in-law Archie Oster, numerous nieces and nephews.   

The family would like to thank the dedicated caregivers at St. Anne's.

Geoffrey A. Byrne

Geoffrey A. Byrne, 79, of Lititz, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Joan M. Kline Byrne with whom he celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on June 13, 2022. He was born in Columbia, son of the late George W. and Margaret Lodge Byrne. Geoffrey worked in the construction trade. He was a veteran of the US Navy and a member of East Petersburg Mennonite Church, where he was a greeter. Geoffrey enjoyed woodworking, his grandchildren and also praying with people at the Downtown Ministries, Lancaster.

Surviving in addition to his wife, step-children: Lisa (Steve) Cockerill, Australia; Vicki (the late J. Edward, III) Weber, Lancaster and Eva Davis (Julian Govan), Camden, NJ. Seven step-grandchildren: Dakota, Carley, Elijah, Elliot, Ehren, Brandon and Dylan. One brother: Michael Byrne. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Gregory and Larry Byrne.
