Carl S. Hackman, Sr., 94, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, formerly of Willow Street, peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family on Friday, September 30, 2022. He was born in Willow Street, son of the late Harry L. Hackman and Anna Shenk Hackman of Willow Street. Carl was preceded in death by his sisters Barbara Jane Weimer and June Louise Galbach. He is also preceded in death by his daughter Peggy L. Stohler.

Carl is survived by his loving wife Evelyn Bernice (Vinson), with whom he just celebrated his 73rd wedding anniversary. Also surviving are two daughters Carol Ann Disanto (William), New Holland, Debra L. Sload (G. David), Conestoga and a son, Carl S., Jr. (Pamela S.), Mount Joy. Five grandchildren include William Jr., Elizabeth (deceased) Joshua, Janelle, and Megan. Seven great grandchildren include Elizabeth, Daniel, Timothy, Jethro (deceased), Trye Jethro, Sylas and Asher.

Carl graduated from West Lampeter High School in 1946, then enlisted in the United States Navy where he served two years as a SeaBee during World War II, where he received the Victory Medal. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he worked as a carpenter apprentice then advanced to foreman, for a home builder, Samuel E. Long, General Contractor for nine years, then Diller Plank for 7 years, then retired from Warfel Construction Company after 30 years of service, twenty-five of those years serving as a superintendent.

Carl experienced many highlights of his profession in the construction field, one in which he worked in for over 45 years.

Carl received a citation from the United States Army Combat Systems for the building of the Virbration Test Facility at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Aberdeen, Maryland, in 1988. There is no other facility like this in the world today.

Carl was instrumental in the building of Air Products, Lancaster PA, West Shore Office Building, Camphill, PA, the Ben Franklin Hospital wing at Masonic Homes, Elizabethtown, East Towne Mall Shopping Center, Lancaster, and Phoebe Burks Village Retirement Home in Wernersville, PA. Other big projects include Human Factor’s Engineering, Aberdeen Maryland and Chemical Laboratory Building, Edgewood Maryland.

After retiring briefly, he was called back into the work force as a project manager in the oversight of the building of the youth center for the Refton Brethren in Christ Church in Refton, PA. He was also superintendent for the building of the Lion’s Club Community Building in Willow Street, PA.

While retired, Carl and his wife Evelyn would travel to Winter Haven Florida for the winter months and spent their summers at their summer home in Ocean View, Delaware. They both loved to fish on their boat in the ocean and received quite a few citations for their catches.

In addition to fishing, Carl was an avid hunter, including small game of squirrel, rabbit, pheasant, as well as hunting deer. He hunted in Maryland and Pennsylvania as well as Texas with his good friend and brother-in-law Frank Goodhart and his sons, ​where he shot quite a few trophy buck. Carl was a member of the Lone Pine Hunting Club, Potter County, PA for over 50 years.

In 1975, while building the Ben Franklin Hospital, Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, Carl was introduced to the Free and Accepted Masons. In 1977, He began on the road to becoming a Free and Accepted Master Mason when he became a member of Lamberton Lodge # 476, Lancaster, PA where he received his 1st - 3rd degree. As a member of Lamberton Lodge he was active as worshipful master in 1984, and again in 1994. He was a member of the membership committee, a steward, a member of the Masonic Education Committee, was a representative to the Masonic Center Board, Chairman of the 125th Anniversary Banquet, member of the sick and visitation committee and member of the Charity Committee. He received a meritorious service award in 1994.

He also became a member of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Lancaster PA in 1977, where he received his 4th - 14th degree and, in 1988 he was Thrice Potent Master. Other committees in which he was involved include treasurer for the Lancaster County Scottish Rite Club, member of the stage crew, -Emeritus status, membership committee, advisory committee, building committee, and past chairperson. He was also instrumental in the planning, design and building of the Learning Center for Dyslexia at Lancaster Masonic Center, Lancaster PA.

Carl was also an active member for Order of DeMolay, Lancaster Chapter where he served on the Advisory Council, invested in the Honorary Legions of Honor Award in 1986, and was a member of the Susquehanna Valley Order of DeMolay.

Carl was also a member of the Lancaster County Shrine Club from 1978- 2015. As a member of the Shrine Club, he was active in the Oriental Band where he was a member, trustee, and president of the club in 1998. He served as a drummer and pushed the snake basket and was the overseer of Matilda, the camel, which included transportation of her to Virginia Beach and various other parades.

Carl was also a member of the Zembo Temple Shrine, Harrisburg, PA where he was a member of the membership committee, and circus ads and communication committee and a member of the Zembo oriental band. He received several membership awards while being a member of this club.

Next, Carl was a member of Harrisburg Consistory, Harrisburg Pa, in 1978 where he received his 15th - 32nd degrees. Here he functioned as a degree worker and steward and served on the membership committee. He was past president of Lancaster County Scottish Rite Club. A highlight of his masonry journey was when he was coronated with his 33rd Honorary Degree Masonry in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1995.

Carl, and his wife, were members of the James Buchanan High Twelve Club # 687. Here they were charter members of the club. He served as President for 2 years and a masonic representative and was the High Twelve of the Year 1996-1997. He also received the Gold Honor Award 1991 by the York Rite Sovereign College of North America.

Carl was also a member of York Rite Masonry and belonged to the following chapters: Royal Arch Chapter No 43, where he was past High Priest and Goodwin Council No 19, Royal and Select Master Masons, Lancaster PA, and Commandery No ​13, Knights Templar, Lancaster PA where he was a representative to the Masonic Board. He was also a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Lancaster Forest No 27.

In addition to his voluntary activities of the Free and Accepted Masons, Carl was involved within the community and his church. Early in his married life, he was a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Willow Street Fire Company and Ambulance Association. He was also a past member of the Willow Street Lion’s Club where he was on the board and received Lion of the Year Award in 2003. He was a member of American Legion Post 34, Lancaster as well as past member of Seabee Veterans of America, Seabee Island X-5, Lancaster PA.

Carl was a former member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, South Queen and Farnum Streets, Lancaster, for over 62 years, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees, the building committee, Boy Scout committee and a member of the bowling and softball teams as well as the choir, singing bass. Then Carl and his wife Evelyn transferred their church membership to Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church in Mountville, PA, where he was also active in the choir.

As a boy, Carl and his family attended Boehm’s United Methodist Church in Willow Street. Carl will be buried here alongside his parents, granddaughter, and great grandson.

The Funeral Service will be held at Boehm’s United Methodist Church, 13 West Boehm’s Road, Willow Street, on Monday, October 10, 2022 at 1:00 P. Viewing from 11:00 A.M. until 12:45 P.M. when a masonic service will be held. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery with Full Military Honors. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
