John R. Swarr, 85, of Columbia, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Juniper Village, Mount Joy. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane Swarr, who passed away on November 21, 2018. John was born in Columbia, son of the late Christian and Florence Smith Swarr. He was an inspector, having worked for Alcoa and Wyeth Laboratories before his retirement. John was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict with the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, Class of 1953; was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church; a lifetime member of Red Rose Memorial VFW Post #2435; a former member of Hambones Pool League; was an avid bowler; worked with his dad as a paper hanger; and enjoyed going to the hunting camp in Perry County with his family and friends.
He is survived by one daughter: Kathy A. (Keith) Hoffman, Manheim. Two sons: John M. (Dora) Swarr, Columbia; and Mark L. (Krista J.) Swarr, York. One granddaughter: Madison Jane Swarr. He was the last of his immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Workman Funeral Homes, Inc., 31 South Eighth Street, Columbia on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. Final Commendation and Farewell will be in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with Full Military Honors. Please omit flowers.
