William G. Heckman, 77, of Bainbridge, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Hershey Medical Center. He was the husband of Charlotte A. Gusler Heckman. He was born in Pottsville, son of the late Jerome W. and Dorothy Mae Smith Heckman. He was a Trooper for the Pennsylvania State Police for 12 years before his retirement.

Surviving in addition to his wife, his children: David A. Heckman, Middletown; Lesley A. (David) Viola, Middletown; and Scott C. Heckman, Northumberland. One step-daughter: Amanda E. Gingrich-Peterson, Harrisburg. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One sister: Bonnie Bohenick, Harrisburg.

Grace L. Kriner, 87, a lifelong resident of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Clyde F. “Rock” Kriner, Sr. who passed away on September 9, 1998. She was born in Columbia, daughter of the late George, Sr. and Rachel G. Price Millar. She worked at K.D. Tool and also at ITT Grinnell. She was of the Christian faith and was a member of Chickies Rock Lodge #307 of the Moose. She enjoyed her trips to Ocean City, MD and Glendale, AZ. Grace just adored the town of Columbia, and was a great mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother.

She is survived by her children: Clyde F. Kriner, Jr., Lancaster; Lenore G. (Craig A., Sr.) Manley, Columbia; Dottie (Richard) Collison, Harrington, DE; and George Kriner, Arkansas. Ten grandchildren. Five great-grandchildren. One great-great grandchild. One brother: Donald (Shirley) Millar, York. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Christine M. Kriner; one granddaughter: Lenore Catherine Brubaker; seven brothers and sisters.

Gerald F. "Jerry" Hess, 86, of Mountville, passed away peacefully at Paramount Senior Living, Maytown on Saturday, August 15, 2020, with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Martha M. (Leaman) Hess and together they celebrated 61 years of marriage this past November. He was born in Manor Township in 1934, son of the late Willis C. and Ruth (Fisher) Hess. Jerry was a graduate of Penn Manor High School, a member of Central Manor Church of God and was a veteran of the US Army. He worked for 40 years as a feed truck driver for Miller and Bushong/Pennfield Corporation. Jerry served as a 4H Leader for many years; was active in sports; enjoyed hunting; snowmobiling; and spending time with his family and friends. He was the oldest of six children and he remained very close with his siblings throughout his life. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoyed the many fun times and holidays spent at "Memal" and "Pap's" house.

Surviving in addition to his wife, two sons: Robert S. husband of Deborah (Carmean) Hess, Marietta; and Timothy A. husband of Lori (Barkle) Hess, Mount Joy. Four grandchildren: John Hess (husband of Nicole); Nicole Martin; Christopher Hess (husband of Tiffany); and Andrea Hess. Twelve great-granchildren. One sister: Leora M. Hess. Two brothers: John D. Hess, Sr.; and Kenneth F. Hess. He was preceded in death by one grandson: Robert S. Hess, Jr. and two brothers: Willis C. and Donald E. Hess.

The Family would like to thank the staff at Paramount Senior Living as well as Asana Hospice for the excellent care given to Gerald during the last months of his life.

The Funeral Service will be held at Central Manor Church of God, 387 Penn St., Washington Boro, PA 17582 on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at 2:30 P.M. with Pastor Scott Davis, officiating. Laura L. Zimmerman, 53, of Mountville, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at home. She was the wife of Dwayne A. Zimmerman with whom she celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary on July 24, 2020. She was born in Marion, IN daughter of Phillip R. and Eloise Johnson Rule, Lancaster. She was a payroll accounting clerk having worked for Henry Mearig Motors and for Lancaster County Motors for the past 17 years. She attended Living Faith Church, Lancaster. Laura was a loving wife, daughter and friend. She loved the Lord, which gave her strength, guidance and direction. Laura was a loving, faithful child of God. She glorified him even during times of tribulation. She devoted her life to the Lord and leaned on him for courage and discernment. Her greatest mission in life was to put God first. She wanted his light to be the only thing seen, felt, and remembered. She encouraged us all to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. (Romans 12: 12) Today we can rest assured that she is walking, dancing and rejoicing freely in the Lord's presence. She cherished the relations she had with Ti Williamson and other little ones in her life.

Surviving in addition to her husband and parents, her siblings: Julia Koch, Lancaster; Jeffrey Rule, Virginia Beach, VA; and Kristine (Jon) Eberly, Lancaster. Many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also two amazing godchildren.

Nancy Jean (Roberts) Keck Parker, 78, of Manheim, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020 at home. She was the wife of the late John H. Keck (1996) and Homer L. Parker, Sr. (2005). She was born in Mount Vision, NY, daughter of the late Cassius Mathewson Roberts and Emma Elizabeth Davis Roberts. Nancy was a member of Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church and grew up in upstate New York, and graduated from Morris Central School. She worked many years for insurance companies, handling all aspects of claims and in later years she specialized in Worker's Compensation Claims. She had taken many insurance courses and earned the designation of Certified Professional Insurance Woman (CPIW). She was an avid reader, loved to crochet, do crossword puzzles, watched movies, listened to music, loved letter writing, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family.


She is survived by sons: Elbert John (Rita Marie) Morehouse, Corinth, MS; Larry J. (Marcie) Morehouse, Maumee, OH; and Thomas J. (Jeni) Morehouse, Sprakers, NY. Stepdaughters: Regina Keck (James) Ensor, Landisville; and Deborah Keck, Mountville. Several grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sister-in-law: Soon H. Roberts, Cordova, TN. She was preceded in death by one brother: Frederick A. Roberts (2004). One sister: Dorothy L. Manley. Two special nieces: Joan Manley Crippen and Carol Manley Stickles.

Paul R. Culp, 83, of York, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Manor Care Kingston Court. He was born in Columbia, son of the late John H. and Mary E. Sherick Culp. He was a printer, having worked for Mifflin Press for over 30 years. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. Paul enjoyed hunting, was a member of East Prospect Fish and Game and the Chickies Rock Lodge #307 of the Moose.


He is survived by his children: Patricia (Steve) Grilly, Delroy; Christina (Dave) Hildebrand, Bridgewater, ME; John Culp, Craley; and Deborah (Jac) Seitz, Craley. Six grandchildren. Two great-granddaughters: Lucy and Riley. Brothers: John (Joanne) Culp, Sewell, NJ; and David Culp, Mountville. Sisters: Jean Bowers, Hellam; Donna Smith, Columbia; Joan (Everett) Clark, Brunswick, GA; and Connie Hartlaub, Dover. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Richard, Victor and Robert Culp.

Pauline Mae Fritz, 100, of Wrightsville, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at home. She was the wife of the late Oliver D. Fritz. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Claude and Helen Swinehart Campbell. She was a member of Wrightsville Assembly of God. Pauline enjoyed crocheting, word search puzzles, her church, her family, especially her grandchildren, and going to lunch at Hinkles. 

She is survived by her daughter: Sharon M. (Patrick) Young. One son-in-law: Ted Byers. Four grandchildren: Patricia (Dave) Ohl; Shannon L. (Scot) Young; Emily and Steven Byers. Five great-grandchildren: Teague, Sydney, Brynne, Patrick, and Abby. She was preceded in death by one daughter: Carol Ann Byers. One brother and two sisters.

Margaret A. "Margie" Bachman, 88, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. She was the wife of the late Leroy S. "Bachy" Bachman. Margie was born in Columbia, daughter of the late Charles and Edna Mann Hank. She was a very active member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship and also sang in the choir. Margie was also very active in the Mountville Ministry for the Aged, and was a very compassionate caregiver for family and many others. She loved and enjoyed her family very much.

She is survived by one son: James H. (Theresa E.) Bachman and one daughter: Diane L. (David A.) Schaeffer, all of Mountville. Four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One brother: Charles (Mary Ellen) Hank, Mountville. She was preceded in death by one son: Thomas L. Bachman.

The Family would like to extend a special thank you to her caregiver, Erma for her excellent care and compassion. Also, to St. Anne's Retirement Community for the care shown to them. The Bachman Family appreciated the many visits, cards, letters, and prayers that she received.

John H. Rathvon, Sr., 86, of Mountville and Clermont, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Gerry Yunginger Rathvon with whom he would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary, today, July 26, 2020. John was born in Lancaster, son of the late Emily Wright. He worked as an accountant for Bavarian Soft Pretzel Company for most of his life. John proudly served in the US Army as a paratrooper and a combat medic during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Elks, the American Legion, the VFW, and was Santa Claus for Christ Home of Paradise for over 30 years. He flew in on a helicopter and took the children for rides. John was a volunteer for the Cosmopolitan Club, and Easter Seals, raising funds for Give Kids the World Village for 12 years. John was also a member of the "Irish for Cure", Relay for Life Team. In his free time, his biggest passion was his love of Disney World. He took trips there with his family and friends and was a Director for the Magic Kingdom Club, promoting others to travel to Disney and Downtown Disney.

Surviving in addition to his wife, four children: John H. Rathvon, Jr. married to Cynthia, Lancaster; Michelle Mitterer, Mountville; Raymond Garraffa married to Denise, Strasburg; and Denise A. Yeagley, Laureldale. Ten grandchildren: Michael, Hilary, Jason, Tara, Ashley, Tyler, Christopher, Taylor, Crystalynn, and Kyle. Two great-granddaughters: Ryleigh and McKenna. Three brothers: Ron, Don, and Michael Klos, all of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by one brother: Curtis Wright.

The Memorial Service will be held at Church of God of Landisville, 171 Church Street, Landisville, on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Tim Bistline, officiating. Due to guidelines, Masks and Social Distancing are required. Military Honors will be accorded by the US Army and the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. Roy S. Derr, 63, of West Hempfield Township, passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday, July 15, 2020. He was the husband of Karen Speros Derr with whom he was married for 34 years. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Leroy P. and Betty J. Markley Derr. He was a technician for Autohaus, Lancaster for 38 years before his retirement in 2015. Roy was an avid hunter, loved boating and his family. He will be sorely missed.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one brother-in-law: Anthony J. Speros. One sister-in-law: Valerie L. Johnson. Three nephews: James M. Speros, Samuel T. Speros, and Benjamin M. Speros.

Jean (Sowers) McMullen Charles, 84, formerly of Conestoga, entered into the eternal presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, early Saturday morning, July 18, 2020, at Conestoga View. She was the wife of the late Aldus W. Charles with whom she was married for 61 years before he passed away. Jean previously resided at the Brereton Manor, which she loved. Jean was born in Little Pittsburg Valley, daughter of the late Howard E. and Amanda Irene Sowers McMullen. Jean was a graduate of Penn Manor High School, Class of 1953. She worked and retired from the Millersville University in Student Services, and was a member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, where she served in the AWANA ministry for 31 years. Jean loved gardening, planting flowers, canning food, and going to her cabin in Potter County with her grandkids.

She will be lovingly missed by hers two sons: Dwayne A. Charles, married to Cindy (Scheid) of Lancaster, and Thomas L. Charles, married to Melissa (Geib) of Lancaster. Four granddaughters: Cheryl married to Brian Marchuck of Lancaster; Christa married to Thomas S. Hotchkiss, Jr., of Lancaster; Emlee Charles of Lancaster; and Ashlee Charles of Lancaster. One great-granddaughter: Lydia, of Lancaster. And two brothers: Gerald S. McMullen of Conestoga; and Kenneth S. McMullen of Leicester, NC. Jean was preceded in death by her two infant sons: James L. and Kenneth P.; and two brothers Harold S. McMullen and Lewis S. McMullen.

John E. Douglas, II, 75, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at Masonic Village. He was the husband of the late Robin L. Toms Douglas, who passed away on January 12, 2001. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late John E., Sr. and Vivian Wilson Douglas. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and enjoyed baseball and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan.

He is survived by two sons: John E. Douglas, III, Plains; and Shawn A. (Hannah) Douglas, Lebanon. Three grandchildren: Elsa, Layla and Liam Douglas. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter: Piper Douglas and his brothers.
