Aarika J. Schlinkman

Aarika J. Schlinkman, 17, of Millersville, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 16, 2016. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Brian C. Schlinkman, and Aimee S. Baxter Hollinger. Aarika formerly attended Hempfield High School but recently moved to Penn Manor to complete her senior year. She loved working with animals, horseback riding, and four wheeling.

 She is survived by her father and step mother: Brian C. (Shelby) Schlinkman. Her mother and step-father: Aimee (Matt) Hollinger. One Brother: Bradley Schlinkman. One sister: Samantha (Adam) Arment. Two step-brothers: Barry Moore and Nathaniel Hollinger.  Five step-sisters: Kristen Moore; Hannah Moore; Haley Moore; Natalie Hollinger; and Nicole Hollinger. Paternal grandmother: Delores Jean Schlinkman. Maternal grandmother: Audrey Campbell. Step-paternal grandmother: Joanne Hollinger. She is also survived by her companion: Kyle J. Stoltzfus.

James R. McGuigan, Jr.

James R. McGuigan, Jr., 71, of East Hempfield Twp., passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at home. He was the loving companion of Connie J. Sipe for 30 years. He was born in Lancaster, son of Elva M. Snyder McGuigan, Manheim, and the late James R. McGuigan, Sr. He worked for Trojan Boat Co., KD Tool, and Childcraft before his retirement. James was a member of Lancaster Church of the Brethren and enjoyed camping; fishing; and riding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle in his younger years.

 Surviving in addition to his companion, two daughters: Stacy and Patricia. Four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. One brother: Kenneth L. McGuigan, Lititz. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Ronald and Edwin McGuigan.

Donald W. Noll

Donald W. Noll, 85, of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at Masonic Village. He was the husband of the late Doris V. Noll, who passed away on March 7, 2002. He was born in Columbia, son of the late George W., Sr. and Margaret Carnahan Noll. He was a tile inspector having worked for Armstrong World Industries for 40 years before his retirement in 1988. Donald was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Columbia Lodge #286 F&AM, and other Masonic organizations. He was a veteran who served with the PA National Guard and enjoyed worldwide traveling.

 He is survived by two daughters: Donna F. Smoker and Deborah A. (Gerald) Wasche, all of Lancaster. Two granddaughters: Angela M. Abramo and Melinda A. Wasche. Two great-grandchildren: Adelynn Grace Abramo and Jackson Thomas Abramo. He was preceded in death by one sister: Margot F. McKain and one brother: George W. Noll, Jr.

Alaina R. McCall, 23, of East Hempfield Twp., passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2016. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of Richard K. McCall, East Hempfield Twp., and Stacy Richmond Dickerson, Akron. She was a graduate of Hempfield High School, Class of 2011 and the American Beauty Academy. She was a very talented artist, enjoying drawings and all aspects of art.

Abram K. Shirk

Abram K. Shirk, 74, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was born in West Hempfield Twp., son of the late Moses M. and Lydia N. Kniesley Shirk. He was a shop crane operator for High Steel for 34 years before retiring in 2003. He enjoyed singing and going for walks.

He is survived by two sons: Charles A. (Annette) Shirk, and Thomas A. (Donna) Shirk. Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. One brother: William Shirk. Two sisters: Frances M. (Richard) Armstrong and Esther S. Shirk. He was preceded in death by one brother: Samuel K. Shirk and one sister: Doris N. Shirk.

Samuel Abel Tolossa, infant son of Abel T. Werku and Netsanet Areda of Mountville, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Women and Babies Hospital.

William R. Shunk

William R. Shunk, 66, of West Hempfield Twp. passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia J. Townsley Shunk, with whom he celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on August 19, 2016. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Richard D. and Patricia Boyce Shunk. Bill was a technician/salesperson having worked for Colonial Copy Products for 25 years and also Phillips Office Solutions before his retirement. He attended the Mount Joy Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was well loved by everyone and will be missed for the sincere consideration that he gave to others.

Henry G. Gentzler

Henry G. Gentzler, Sr., 86, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the husband of Mary Lou Bartch Gentzler with whom he celebrated their 65th  wedding anniversary on June 2, 2016. He was born in Lancaster County, son of the late Harry W. and Annie S. Walters Gentzler. Henry was the plant superintendent at the former Cargill, Marietta for forty-one years before his retirement in 1991. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on church council; a veteran of US Army serving during the Korean conflict; was a member of the former Washington Boro-Manor Lions Club; served on Washington Boro Council; enjoyed NASCAR; and was an avid sprint race car fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife, one daughter: Kimberly K. Bell, Mount Joy. Seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son: Henry G. “Hank” Gentzler, Jr., and ten brothers and sisters.

Patricia L. Stephens

Patricia L. Stephens, 75, of Mountville, formerly of Johnstown, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016.  She was born in Johnstown, daughter of the late George D. and Agnes Rafferty Miles. She worked as a unit clerk in the emergency room at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for many years before her retirement. She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by three sons: David M. Stephens, Lititz, James P. (Fiancée Lori L. McCardell) Stephens, Lebanon, and Thomas W. (Danna M.) Stephens, Landisville. Five grandchildren:  Tyler, Timothy, Hannah, Dylan, and Tanner. Six brothers and sisters: Thomas Miles, Bill Miles, Maryann Miles, Victoria Dugas, Deborah Thomas, and Steven Miles. She was preceded in death by one brother Donald Miles.

John M. Sponar

John M. Sponar, 67, of Lower Windsor Township passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at home. He was the husband of Hazel E. Bachman Sponar with whom he celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on June 15th, 2016. He was born in San Francisco, CA, son of the late John T. and Margaret Sheehy Sponar. He worked for Conrail for 9 years and also was a union painter for the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades for 30 years before his retirement in January 2014. He attended Living Word Community Church, was a veteran of the US Army during the Vietnam conflict serving two tours of duty. He was a lifetime member of VFW post #7045 Hellam, King of Clubs Hunting Club, Hornton, VA, American Rifle Association, Yorkanna Game Club, and the Boykin Spaniel Society.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Jon C. Sponar, East Prospect, and Justin W. (Fiancée Abbey) Sponar, York, PA. Two grandchildren: Emily A. Sponar and Carter. Two sisters: Rosemary Weidman, Ephrata and Carol Sponar, Columbia.

Paul V. Hess

Paul V. Hess, 89, of Manor Township, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. He was the husband of the late Ruth A. Denlinger Hess, who passed away on July 16. 2008. He was born in Manor Twp., son of the late Parke E. and Elizabeth Fox Hess. He was a farmer and also worked in the Maintenance Department for Manor Twp. for 20 years, and also at John Herr’s Market. Paul was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII, a member of Central Manor Church of God, where he was a Deacon and served on Church Council, and the Missions Committee. He enjoyed hunting, outdoor activities and was well known for his gardening.

He is survived by one son: David D. (Amy B.) Hess, Washington Boro. Two grandchildren: Sara E. Hess and Joel D. (Kelly) Hess. Four great-grandchildren: Elijah D., Ellianna G., Jude B., and Jovie P. Hess. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Harry, Wilbur, and John Hess. Three sisters: Grace Hess, Mary Rohrer, and Ruth Beats.

Virginia H. "Ginny" Zercher

Virginia H. “Ginny” Zercher, 97, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at Conestoga View. She was the wife of the late Chester B. Zercher, who passed away in 1966. She was born in Columbus, OH, daughter of the late Leonard W. and Viola C. Nocks Pearson. She worked as a shipping picker at KD Tools and also operated the snack bar at Columbia Lanes, which her late husband owned. She also worked as a hostess at the former Copper Lustre Restaurant. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Auxiliary of BPOE #1074.

She is survived by one daughter: Ruth Ann (Frank) Roschel, Lancaster. Two grandchildren: Nichole Fasnacht and fiancé Joe Madilia and Michael (Gwen) Roschel. Three great-grandchildren: Chase, Brooke, and Leah. She was preceded in death by one son: Chester H. “Chet” Zercher, and one sister: Margaret Schauren.

Carl R. Foltz

Carl R. Foltz, 83, of Mountville, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. He was the husband of Margaret J. Foltz, who passed away on March 17, 2014. He was born in Washington Boro, son of the late Raymond H. and Hazel Shultz Foltz. He was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1950 and a graduate of F & M College. He was a Senior Research Scientist for Armstrong World Industries for more than 40 years. Carl was a  member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church; the Mountville Lions Club for over 50 years where he held many offices and served in many capacities; Mountville Community Service Foundation; served as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Master; was a life member of the Mountville Fire Company; served with the Fire Police at Washington Boro Fire Company; served with Carpenter’s Calling Mission Team; served with Josh McDowell Ministry, having taken a trip to Russia; was a Sunday School Teacher with multiple churches; a member of the Lancaster Area Soaring Society, where he enjoyed model airplanes; volunteered with Meals on Wheels; and he was a member of the former Hemlock Hollow Hunting Club in Potter County. Carl sponsored a family from Russia as well as sponsored Fresh Air Children.

Carl is survived by seven children: Carl (Diane) Foltz, Jr.; Margaret “Pret” (Douglas) Warner; Mark Foltz; Beth (Steve) Myers; Matthew (Tammy) Foltz; Douglas (Melissa) Foltz; and Alice (Chris) Ringer. Nineteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Two brothers: Donald (Nancy) Foltz and Richard (Mary) Foltz. One sister: Jean Dyer. One half-brother: Raymond (Karen) Long and one half-sister: Arlene (Roy) Johnson . He was preceded in death by one sister: Pearl M. Shaud.

Roberta Freijo-Lopez

Roberta Freijo-Lopez, 47, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, July 23, 2016. She was the wife of Victor M. Lopez, Jr., to whom she was married for 28 years. She was born in Bronx, NY, daughter of the late Jose R. and Amelia Fuentes Freijo. She worked for United Disability Services for 10 years.

Dolores G. Wernecke

Dolores G. Wernecke passed away on July 9, 2016, at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Columbia, PA. She was born in Beaverdale, PA on January 8, 1924 to Benjamin and Teresa (Betti) Bennati. She is pre-deceased by her parents, her husband Lawrence, two brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter. She leaves behind 3 daughters: Laverne DiNino, Linda Takac, and Louise Hornyak. James A. Bolin

James A. Bolin, 83, of Mountville, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2016 at home in the presence of his loving family. He was the husband of Gloria S. Mills Bolin with whom he celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on June 19, 2016. He was born in Bradford, son of the late Edward E. and Beaulah Burger Bolin. He lived in Bradford until 1949, when the family moved to Center Line, MI. While there, Jim worked as a deliveryman for Brown Dairy, delivering milk in a horse drawn wagon. Upon graduation from Busch High School, in 1959, he returned to the Bradford area to continue working with his father on the family’s dairy farm. During these years, Jim’s interests included roller skating, square dancing, stock car racing, and dating (as many as two and three nights a week). Jim met his future wife, Gloria, at a roller skating rink in Bradford, in 1953 and they married two years later. Jim and Gloria lived in a mobile home on the farm until they built their home. He continued to work with his dad on the farm, delivering milk for Bolin Dairy, until their dairy farm merged with four others in the Bradford area, including Sunny Brook Dairy. Jim worked as a sales manager until he and his family relocated to the Lancaster area in October of 1971. In Lancaster, Jim worked for Turkey Hill Dairy as a wholesale sales manager for 37 years, before retiring in 2003. Jim was a member of Hempfield United Methodist Church, and also a member, (since 1971), of Manor Ridge Lions Club where he was Past President for four terms. He served in many capacities at the District Level including: District Governor-14 D (2010-11), Zone Chair Person, and the Region Chairperson. Jim received many District Awards, including the Joseph Wroblewski Award, the Melvin Jones Award, and the Pennsylvania Fellowship Award. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, and television (clicking the remote control).

 Surviving in addition to his wife, one son: Jeffery (Linda) Bolin, Lancaster. Two daughters: Brenda (Barry) Shenberger, Manheim and Robin Bolin, Lancaster. Seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One sister: Dorothy Harrold, Seminole, OK. He was preceded in death by one great-grandson: Ian Swarr, and one brother: William Bolin.

Edward R. Shaub

Edward R. Shaub, 93, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Luther Acres Manor. He was the husband of the late Martha A. Shaub, who passed away on July 30, 2013. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Galen B. and Mary A. Vogel Shaub. He worked as a flask rigger for Lancaster Malleable Castings for many years before his retirement in 1988. He was a very active member of St. John Neuman Catholic Church; was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII; was an avid gardener; and had a collection of post cards and matchbook covers.

 He is survived by one son: Joseph R. Shaub, Mount Joy. Two daughters: Mary A. Shaub, Wilmington, DE; and Janice (William) Curtis, Bishopville, MD. Four granddaughters: Emily Shaub, Sarah Matthews, Nyia Walton, and Alexis Shaub. Four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters.

Farrell L. Poole

Farrell L. Poole, 85, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016. He was the husband of Joan A. Poole, who passed away on February 11, 2016. He was born in Columbia, son of the late Joseph Poole and Mabel Keiser Poole Eshelman. He worked as a laborer for Armstrong World Industries and PennDot before his retirement. He was a veteran of the US Army and a lifetime member and former trustee of Columbia Fire Company #1. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking.

 He is survived by two sons: Richard A. (Terry M.) Poole, Columbia and Michael D. (Renae L.) Poole, Wrightsville. Four grandchildren: Matthew, Meranda, Justin, and Jared. Two great-grandchildren: Walker and Hudson. He was preceded in death by one son: Glenn Poole. Three brother: Harlan, Joseph, and Ephraim Poole. Three sisters: Clara Haake, Erla Clark, and Helen Meiskey.
